Laying paths – how not to damage the trees?

укладання доріжок

Trees are living beings that are quite sensitive to changes in the environment. Changes in the soil lead to the weakening of trees, and often to their death. Injured roots, soil compaction, lack of water and nutrients are just some of the problems that trees face on construction sites.

To understand how far the roots of the tree have gone, look at the crown. The roots reflect the crown underground. But be careful, this only applies to natural species of trees and trees without pruning! The columnar apple or bonsai has a small crown, but its roots go far beyond it. This provides it with enough nutrients and water.

To protect the tree from injury to the roots when laying paths, you need to add a little distance (about 2 m) to the radius of the crown. If the roots are cut off during construction work, their function cannot be compensated by deep tap roots.

There is a question of stability

Tree roots perform several functions. On the one hand, they absorb water and nutrients, on the other hand, they fix the tree in the soil. To do this, each tree develops roots that go vertically into the depths, and roots that go just below the surface.

Compared to oak, which forms a long, thick taproot down, apple or pine has mostly flat roots. If the tree loses its roots on one side during construction, it is no longer fixed to the ground on this side. It does not have a long taproot that supports it against the wind. If the roots on one side of the tree are missing, it is no longer protected from the wind, and the tree falls more easily during a storm. With small trees in the garden, this is rarely a problem, and with large trees there are dangers to buildings and especially to human health and life.

HOW FAR from the tree to pave paths?

Laying paths near trees should be as careful as possible not to damage коріння.

Додайте один-два метри навколо всієї крони в якості “буфера”. Draw a radius around the tree. Be careful with the first stitches. If you come across a root, you need to increase the radius. Make sure that stones, concrete and other heavy objects do not get on the root system. Excessive riding also damages the roots and compacts the soil above the roots.

If trees have recently been planted.

Planning begins when you plant a tree. The young tree has a small crown and a slender stem. But that is changing fast! This tree also grows, its trunk becomes wider and taller, and its roots also grow. Before buying, find out what size your tree will be in adulthood, and find a suitable place. This will help you avoid many problems in the future.

Caring for the tree after laying the path.

When the path is finished, you need to closely monitor the tree. If the leaves or fruits change, it indicates that the tree needs to get used to the new environmental conditions. Laying tracks can lead to less water supply. Also, the soil above the roots can be compacted as a result of construction. Therefore, on hot days it is necessary to water the tree to help it adapt to new conditions.

Do not use salt for roads in winter. This damages the tree and the lawn and has a long lasting effect. Use sawdust or chips to fight ice and snow.
