About houseplants

When trying to find out why this or that houseplant died. That, almost, never take into account the mistakes made in feeding. In some cases, the plant received a very large dose of fertilizer. In others, on the contrary – for a long time did not receive the required amount of nutrients.

With a slight excess of nutrients in houseplants on the leaves can be observed more or less pronounced bright spots. At higher doses of fertilizer, the plant withers, although the soil is quite moist.

There are houseplants that can live a long time without fertilizing. At the same time have a pretty good look (beauty, sansevieria, species of cacti). But this does not apply to all plants. Fast-growing species (azaleas, coleus, cineraria) indicate a lack of nutrition by yellowing the leaves. If the leaves turn yellow and the streaks remain green, this indicates that the plant lacks iron. If only the edges of the leaves turn yellow and the leaf blade remains green between the veins. This means that the plant lacks magnesium. Thus, the symptoms of deficiency of certain mineral elements overlap. But often the causes of yellowing leaves can also be. This is excess light, low soil temperature, or pH. And amateur florists need the help of experts to find out the causes of poor plant condition.

If houseplants show that they have some problems, we must remember when they were last fed. Regular feeding of plants is a very important point.

The first 6-8 weeks after transplanting houseplants are not fed. Because the substrate already contains the required amount of nutrients. Also do not feed in the dormant period. From March to October (period of active growth) plants need more nutrients than in winter. Plants that stand in dark places usually need less water and nutrients than those that stand in the light.

There are also certain rules for applying fertilizers:

First, apply the solution only in moist soil, not dry.

Secondly, the solution should not fall on the leaves!

Third, do not feed the plants standing in the bright sun!

Fourth, do not exceed the doses indicated on the package!

And fifth, for plants that are sensitive to salts, reduce the concentration of fertilizers by half (bromeliads, asparagus, camellia, dendrobium, azalea…), or choose fertilizers designed for certain types of houseplants!

Let’s feed your houseplants properly.
